Support       Glossary of Terms

Below is a comprehensive list of terms and phrases commonly used within the digital publishing industry. Here you should be able to get an understanding of the technical "know how" to create your publications.


DRM - Digital Rights Managment. A facility to allow VCAB clients to protect the publication from unwated viewing.

FLV - Flash Video. The file format used to stream videos in VCAB

FTP - File Transfer Protocol. The method used to transfer files from one computer to another via an internet connection.

HTML - Hyper Text Markup Language. The common Language used to create web pages. The VCAB system will provide you with HTML code to embed into your site.

MP3 - The files associated with standard music files. These can be inserted into a VCAB via creating your own SWF file.

PDF - A PDF (Portable Document File) is the file type used when creating a publication. PDFs are normally created as Hires files by a printing or design company. This files can be uploaded via our VMS system.

SWF - A SWF file (Shockwave file) is the type of file that is viewed when looking at a VCAB. This is a standard Adobe file format. Flash Palyer 9 is the minimum version required. SWF files can also be embedded into a VCAB.

Subdomain - A subdomain is a domain that is part of a larger domain. For example, "mail.example.com" and "calendar.example.com" are subdomains of the "example.com" domain, which in turn is a subdomain of the "com" top-level domain.

Skin - The name given to the interface surrounding each publication. The "skin" can be redesigned and applied with customisable designs.

VCAB - VCAB, or Virtual catalogues and brochures was created in 2003 to allow companies or individuals to convert PDF documents into flash page turning.

VMS - VCAB Management System - The new VCAB managment console that allows you to create and edit your publications. This has replaced our old VCAB Admin.
